Centre County libraries encourage residents to get a library card during national library card sign-up month

BELLEFONTE, PA (September 1, 2024)— As September rolls in, Centre County’s public libraries are marking National Library Card Sign-Up Month with a renewed effort to encourage local residents to take advantage of the many resources available to them at the library. The Bellefonte Library, Centre Hall Area Branch Library, Holt Memorial Library in Philipsburg and the Schlow Centre Region Library in State College invite the community to join in this important initiative.

Currently, about 25% of Centre County residents have a public library card, compared to a nationwide average of about 50% reported in a 2022 WordsRated analysis of data from over 17,500 American libraries. Local libraries aim to boost library card registrations this September and get closer to that national average by highlighting the numerous benefits of having a library card.

Why Sign Up for a Library Card?

A library card opens the door to a world of free resources that can improve everyday life. With it, residents can access a wide range of e-books, e-audiobooks, online classes, traditional books, magazines, DVDs, and more—all without any cost. Additionally, the libraries in Centre County serve as vibrant community hubs, offering storytimes, book clubs, various free or discounted classes and diverse events.

While you don’t need a library card to visit the library, having one allows you to fully take advantage of everything libraries have to offer. A library card also gives you access to a variety of e-resources, allowing you to benefit even if you never actually visit the library. Whether you’re looking to learn something new, find entertainment, or connect with others in the community, a library card is your ticket to countless opportunities.

How to get a Library Card

You can easily sign up for a library card by visiting the Bellefonte Library, Centre Hall Area Branch Library, Holt Memorial Library in Philipsburg, or Schlow Centre Region Library in State College and requesting a library card at the front desk. You will need to present a photo ID with your current address.
