The East Penns Valley Branch Library will close on September 30, 2013.
Thank you for your patronage, advocacy, and support of the East Penns Valley Library over the years.
Despite this closure, Centre County Library will continue to provide high quality materials and resources with excellent customer service to you, our friends and patrons in Penns Valley.
Following are answers to questions you may have to help clarify changes to your library service.
Why didCentre County Library close the East Penns Valley branch?
Long-term cuts in state aid and the rising cost of services due to inflation have been hard on all public libraries in Pennsylvania. As the available resources have dwindled, Centre County Library had to make a decision on how best to continue to serve the most library users.
A private consultant, along with executive staff and the Board of Trustees, analyzed financial, circulation and attendance data for the library system, as well as individual library locations. This data revealed that the closure of the East Penns Valley branch is a regrettable, yet viable solution to assure the continued fiscal health of the organization.
With these concerns in mind, the Centre County Library Board of Trustees voted to close the East Penns Valley branch, effective September 30, 2013.
How can I continue to receive library services?
How do I return items I’ve checked out? The book drop outside the Millheim Borough Building will be open for return materials until October 31st. After November 1, all items must be returned to Centre Library branches in Bellefonte, Centre Hall, Philipsburg, or Schlow Centre Region Library in State College.
Will the Library re-open?
The Board of Trustees is taking into consideration many factors regarding this branch location, including a recommendation that the library will offer collections and furnishings to the local Friends of the Library organization, a volunteer non-profit serving the Penns Valley area. This group may wish to re-open the library as an independent community library.
If you would like more information about the Friends group, please contact EPVLFriends@gmail.com or attend their open planning meeting, which will be held at the Aaronsburg Civics Club on October 8th at 7 PM.
Can I read the full report from the consultant?
Yes, a copy of the report is available at all Centre County Library locations.
