Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?

Students, grades 6-12, are invited to study of economics through Richard Maybury's book Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?.  Students will engage in group discussions of basic concepts and terminology, participate in hands-on activities, and research the seasonal effects of retail pricing for a final project.

Week 1 Discussion topics:  coins vs. tokens, how money has changed, inflation, dollars and legal tender, the meanings on our money

Week 1 Activity:  examine real coins to determine composition and how coins have changed

Purchase of the companion book, A Bluestocking Guide to Economics by Jane A Williams is recommended for those wanting to use this towards graduation credits.
